Guerrilla Marketing

June 10th, 2010

For many of us, when we think of advertising, we think of television adds, infomercials, pop up windows and telemarketers. Traditional advertising is advantageous as it uses a template that audiences expect, which makes it easier to process. Conversely, many people have learned to avoid tradition advertisement. People sit with the remote in hand to change the channel once the advertisement starts, use pop up blockers and hang up on telemarketers. There are simply too many people trying to shove their advertisements onto and unwilling audience. To top it off, traditional advertising can be time consuming and expensive.

However, there are alternatives.

Enter in guerrilla marketing. Guerrilla marketing is an “unconventional system of promotions that relies on time, energy and imagination rather than a big marketing budget.” [1] Perfect for a small business that is looking to create a new and larger client base. One of the main objectives of Guerrilla marketing is to create what is called “buzz”, or word of mouth marketing. It is not always necessary in Guerrilla marketing to reach a large group of people. With luck, the marketing is so interesting that the audience is dying to share the news with friends and family. Another strategy is to attract customers with the hope that they will return as lifelong clients.

Contests, graffiti, viral marketing, coupons, product placement and buzz marketing are all types of Guerrilla marketing. Contests are a popular because they are generally a low cost endeavor that invites consumers to participate in the marketing scheme. Coupons are also popular because they give clients an extra incentive to visit new stores and try out new products. Coupons are “certificate of redemption” A coupon is one way of attracting new customers who are in search of a bargain. If all goes well, that client will come back to patronize your business long after the coupon has expired. Since the advent of the coupons, consumers have saved over $4 billion dollars using these certificates of redemption.2

Guerrilla marketing requires fresh thinking and strategy. Guerrilla marketing is successful because it is out-of-the-box. It attracts customers because it is fresh and different.

Newspapers have been a great resource for distributing coupons for many years.  People have used these coupons to find free offers, good deals and save a lot of money on any thing from a computer to clothing, cell phones, and even groceries.

How My Family Lived off of $1,000 a Month for an Entire Year

May 5th, 2010

We all want to be able to spend freely. Unfortunately, we only make X amount of money each month. How many times have you said, “If only I made more money”? What if the problem isn’t that you don’t make enough money, but how you spend your money? Let me tell you a true story about how my family lived off of $1,000 a month for an entire year. When I graduated college, I got my first “grown-up” job. It was a great job but it didn’t pay well. My first year’s income totaled $12,000. That is not a lot of money and yet, looking back I always had plenty to eat, I had a roof over our head, I had a car, and still I recall going out to eat frequently. I had enough money left over to each month to still enjoy life a little bit. I am not going to lie and say I lived extravagantly but I could still afford to go to the movies every once in a while.

So how was it possible to live without assistance from the government, pay our bills and still have enough left over to go out? My secret was living frugally! Every dime I spent had to be stretched as far as it possibly could. I clipped just about every coupon I found. I had family mailing me coupons and friends giving me coupons too. I had so many people clipping coupons for me; it was amazing to see how far people were willing to go to help when my own friends and family saw no value in coupons. Grocery shopping can be a huge monthly expense for most families. On average, a family of two spends nearly $4,000 a year on groceries! We ate well for nearly half that average. I would carefully plan my shopping trips. I had a tentative menu planned each week. Weekly ads from the store helped planned my meals, since most ads have specials and if I had a coupon that matched the special, I could double my savings. Once my meals were planned I would pull out any coupons I had that could be used on my pre-planned shopping trip. I would make a list, and stick to the list (very important tip if you are shopping on a budget). My shopping trips took some forethought, but I successfully lived off $1,000 a month for an entire year.

Odds are you don’t have to live on as tight of a budget as we had. But what I want you to take away from the story is that you have the power to stretch your money further than you can possibly imagine. And you should never say “I just don’t earn enough money”. It is not about how much money you earn; it is about how smart you are when it comes to spending it! Coupon clipping has become even easier nowadays. Ten years ago, I didn’t have the internet to help find coupons. You would be surprised at the kinds of coupons you can find online.

Online coupons make saving so much easier because you go to the savings instead of waiting for the savings to find you. GoGoCoupons.com is a local coupon site that can help you save on products and services you use everyday! It’s quick, it’s easy, and best of all you are going to have extra cash to spend on things you enjoy. You can have nice things; you just have to know how to make the best out of what you have!

Pizza Personality

May 4th, 2010

What is your Pizza Personality?

Pizza is just about as unique as people! You can personalize your pizza in almost every aspect, from how it’s baked to the various topping choices. Did you know your pizza preferences could indicate a lot more about your personality than just whether or not you like pepperoni?

The Schapiro Research Group in Atlanta Georgia conducted a national survey on pizza preferences and personality traits. As silly as it sounds, this research group has found all kinds of connections between pizza toppings and your personality!

“The findings from the national pizza survey statistically demonstrate that you can identify distinct pizza personality traits and behaviors of Americans simply by the kind of pizza they prefer and what they like to put on it,” said Beth Schapiro, Ph.D., principal of Schapiro Research Group, Inc. “When it comes to pizza, the phrase ‘you are what you eat,’ is really true” (“National Survey Suggests,” 2003).

The research has found three distinct pizza personalities: “California-style” pizza, “New York-style” pizza or “Chicago-style” pizza.  Each personality has unique identifying characteristics, National Survey Suggests Pizza Choices May Reveal Politics (2003), elaborates on the three personalities:

California-style pizza lovers are creative and adventurous, preferring bold and exciting pizza flavors and toppings like BBQ chicken, Thai or Mexican. They are mostly Democrats, and while they join all pizza eaters in wanting to share a slice with Oprah or the President, they would also jump at the chance to eat pizza with Madonna and David Letterman. California-style pizza eaters prefer to spend their free time catching action-adventure flicks or reading the New York Times. They are self-proclaimed rebels and among their preferred dream jobs are book editor or author.

New York-style pizza lovers are traditionalists at heart. They prefer the old standards like sausage or pepperoni when ordering a pie. These pizza lovers would choose Oprah Winfrey and President Bush to share a slice of pizza, and are likely to spend time with their families and play sports on the weekends. New York-style pizza eaters keep up with the world by reading People and the New York Times, and are equally divided among Democrats and Republicans.

Chicago-style pizza lovers have a wild streak and like to live life to its fullest. They are more likely to be women and under 30, and prefer deep dish pizza with sausage and pepperoni with no added seasonings. Like all other pizza eaters, they would love to share pizza with Oprah Winfrey and President Bush, but if given the chance, they would share a slice with Hollywood hunk Denzel Washington. These former high school jocks and likely Republicans catch up on current events by reading USA Today, and they fantasize about being sports stars like Venus Williams, Anna Kournikova or Lance Armstrong.

What is your pizza personality?
There is a fun little quiz that can determine your pizza personality.  Does your pizza personality match your pizza preferences? Find out at:
